Trends in Mobile & Social Applications

The global marketplace is booming for online games, social & mobile games and applications. We have been working with Danica Brinton of LocLabs –a heralded “rock star” in the social/mobile space– recently, and are delighted that she shared some of her insight with us.

Abstract from Social & Mobile Apps and Globalization

There is a level of instant gratification seen from the localization of social games unseen in comparison to software, handhelds, CPU’s, search and web services. This stems from the viral nature of the social-gaming sphere where users are inclined to share games that they enjoy and want to play with friends. Often overlooked, however is that 75% of Facebook users come from outside the US and most prominent social games have over 70% of their user base and 50% of their revenue coming from locales in which the game has been localized. As mobile smart phone adoption grows internationally, the percentages of international usage and revenue (after proper localization) will grow rapidly.

Another trend that presents interesting localization challenges is that of cross-platform apps and games; i.e.: switching Facebook, Android and iPhone platforms. Market tiers differ for these platforms, so do the research into what locales feature more prominently for each platform.

Lastly, it is often quoted that India and China are emerging in the mobile market. As of now, however, India does not necessitate language localization and Mainland China does not present a good positive ROI investment for app localization.

The business case for internationalization is clear: companies have to sell to customers who are buying –> international customers present good buying opportunities –> products must be adapted to sell to international customers. This is not the case.

Keep Score of Your Internationalization Efforts

Those in the localization industry have become more aware of the importance of internationalization as a part of their overall globalization efforts. Software internationalization in particular can be difficult to articulate and efforts can be prone to errors without the proper help.

Lingoport has come across a number of companies that have issues with tracking the status of their internationalization efforts, resulting in hindered global development cycles. Internationalizing and Localizing Cisco’s TelePresence Webinar Recording

In this one-hour online event, presenters from Lingoport, Sajan and Cisco reviewed and discussed some of the challenges faced in internationalizing and localizing TelePresence, including several technologies used in its various components. Globalyzer 3.5 Release Webinar Recording

Lingoport recently released its latest version of Globalyzer: version 3.5.  Below is the webinar that was held to go over the new features of Globalyzer 3.5, designed to help companies reach new locales and keep software applications world-ready. With the latest release, the time and resources required for internationalization have been cut down significantly through a streamlined internationalization process with Globalyzer. Adam Asnes and Olivier Libouban of Lingoport provide an overview of how Globalyzer fixes internationalization bugs using static source code analysis and helps software teams prioritize embedded strings.

Shrinking the Triangle

The good, fast or cheap (pick any two) triangle has been a topic for localization project managers since the charge towards new markets has become highly competitive. When looking at the barriers to entry into new markets, project managers have been investigating ways to shrink the triangle, so that good, fast and cheap can synchronize into one. 

First off, businesses are looking to keep up with the speed of the world today by being the first to enter into a market or the first to publish a story. Or as the great Will Ferrell once said as Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights, “If you’re not first, you’re last.”  Secondly, the issue of good is often not even an issue for most businesses; it is expected and it must be proven. Lastly, cheap is often synonymous with poor quality. For this reason, buyers don’t want the cheap option, rather they settle for the good enough option.

Lingoport recently posed this question on LinkedIn discussion boards and got a passionate response from leading vendors and customers in the localization industry. This inspired a virtual roundtable webinar with localization professionals from the translation-side, localization vendor-side, internationalization-side, content development-side, tools and technology-side, as well as from the customer-side shared their view on how to potentially shrink the triangle.

Globalyzer 3.5 Released; Helps Companies Gain Edge in International Markets

With the emergence of international markets as an alternative to a struggling domestic market, companies are looking towards expanding their reach to more foreign markets. In an article published by The China Daily, it is noted that exports have accounted for half of all economic growth since 2009 in the US.

I recently met Tex Texin (I18n guy) at LocWorld and looked up his Website where he lists a variety of translation, localization, and internationalization tools. Nice job!

Working in the I18n space, I’m wondering which I18n tool (open source or commercial) does work for you and why?!
